Why This Blog

The little-known Nephite writer Chemish left us one verse in the Book of Mormon (Omni 1:9) with no profound testimony given or great doctrine expounded. But in his short paragraph the verb "write" appears five times in one of its forms, and he witnessed simply of his brother's words and the Nephite need to write: "After this manner we keep the records, for it is according to the commandments of our fathers." So after the manner of Chemish I venture to keep my own record here of my journey through the scriptures. My hope is that it will encourage any who pass this way to spend more of their own time with the word of God.

The Best Books

The Lord encouraged us twice in modern revelation to “seek… out of the best books words of wisdom” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:118, 109:7). The very best books are the holy scriptures, and this blog is focused on those. I also occasionally reference other books that inspire me to be better and point my thoughts and feelings heavenward. Below is a list of some of these. Search this blog on the book name to see the most meaningful passages for me.

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo
The Chosen by Chaim Potok
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
L'Aventure ambiguë by Cheikh Hamidou Kane
The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
