More Journeys of Faith
We find more
accounts of journeys taken in faith in other scriptures outside the Book of
Mormon. Abraham lived in Ur when the Lord said to him, "Abraham, get
thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house,
unto a land that I will show thee (Abraham 2:3). He went first to Haran, but
there the Lord told him, "I have purposes to take thee away out of Haran,
and to make of thee a minister to bear my name in a strange land" (Abraham
2:6). Abraham ended up traveling to Egypt under the Lord's direction and
showed great faith in the way that he went wherever God required. At one
point he described his journeying saying, "eternity was our covering and
our rock and our salvation" (Abraham 2:16). I find it interesting
that despite being promised land he spent much of his life traveling with no
home as we would think of it to call his own. But he always went and the
Lord revealed great things to him because of it. Another scriptural
journey that comes to mind is that of Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus. I
imagine that it must have been a trial of their faith to leave their home of
Nazareth to go to Bethlehem and stay there. But that was nothing compared
to angel's command to travel to Egypt: "Arise, and take the young child,
and his mother and flee into Egypt" (Matt. 2:13). How would Joseph provide
for his young family? How would he protect them? What would they do in Egypt?
We know little of what happened in this journey, but it was surely a great act
of faith for these two young parents. Of course, the most famous Biblical
journey was that of the exodus from Egypt. Moses clearly exhibited great
trust in the Lord to take the numerous children of Israel into the
wilderness. The people themselves lacked the faith they needed to make it
to the promised land, but I think we have to give them credit for the actual
crossing of the Red Sea. They really had no other choice, but it still
took great trust in Moses to follow him "into the midst of the sea"
with the water "a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their
left" (Exodus 14:22). I have to think that we would all hesitate a little
before venturing in-would the water really hold? Knowing the outcome of
all three of these stories, we should be inspired to trust the Lord more in
what He requires of us in our day.
