A Timeline of the War
Here is a timeline of the some of the major events of the
wars that took place between the Nephites and Lamanites in Alma 43-62. I did this in hopes that it would help me understand
the chronology better, and I’ve gained a greater appreciation for how long and
complex this difficult war was for the Nephites. The years listed are the reign
of the judges as mentioned in the text.

18th
year
o Moroni
and his army fight and defeat Zerahamenah and his Lamanite army near the land
of Jershon (Alma 43)
·
19th
year
o Amalickiah
and his followers try to take over the Nephite government; their coup fails and
Amalickiah flees with a handful of dissenters who are able to escape (Alma 46)
o Amalickiah
uses treachery to kill the king of the Lamanites and become king himself; he
starts to incite the people of the Lamanites to anger against the Nephites
(Alma 47-48)
o The
Lamanites attack Ammonihah and Noah but fail due to the incredible
fortifications that have been built by Moroni (Alma 49)

20th
– 23rd years
o The
Nephites have peace and continue to build fortifications to protect their lands
(Alma 50)
·
24th
year
o Morianton
starts and internal battle among the Nephites trying to take part of the land
of Lehi; Morianton tries to flee with his people and are headed up and stopped
by Teancum (Alma 50)
o Nephihah
the chief judge dies and his son Pahoran becomes the chief judge (Alma 50)
·
25th
year
o King-men
among the Nephites try to change the law and create a king among them, but the
voice of the people goes against them (Alma 51)
o Amalickiah
comes down with an enormous army to the Nephites and takes over the cities of
Moroni, Nephihah, Lehi, Morianton, Omner, Gid, and Mulek on the east borders of
the land (Alma 51)
o Teancum
met up with Amalickiah and his army and stopped them from going to the land
Bountiful; on the last day of the year Teancum slays Amalickiah (Alma 51)

26th
year
o Ammoron,
the brother of Amalickiah, becomes king of the Lamanites (Alma 52)
o The
Lamanites retreat back to Mulek; the Nephites continue making preparations for
war and the Lamanites hold on to the cities they have taken (Alma 52)
o Moroni
tells Teancum that he is fighting the Lamanites by the west sea and can’t come
to help him (Alma 52)
o A
different army of Lamanites take possession of Manti, Zeezrom, Cumeni, and
Antiparah on the western side of the war (Alma 56)
o The
2000 stripling warriors determine to fight under the command of Helaman to
avoid their fathers having to break their covenant and they join Antipus at the
city of Judea (Alma 56)

27th
year
o Teancum
prepares to attack the city of Mulek but does not and he waits in Bountiful;
Moroni arrives at the end of the year in Bountiful with his army (Alma 52)
o On
the other front, Helaman and the stripling warriors battle aside the men of
Antipus and defeat the Lamanites miraculously near the city of Antiparah (Alma
56)

28th
year
o Moroni,
Teancum, and others hold a council of war among the Nephites (Alma 52)
o The
Nephites use a decoy to get the Lamanites to come out of the city of Mulek and Moroni
captures the city (Alma 52)
o A
battle ensues between the Nephites and the Lamanites led by Jacob the Zoramite;
the Nephites win, kill Jacob, and take many prisoners; Moroni is wounded in the
battle (Alma 52)
o Lehi
takes command of Mulek; Teancum prepares fortifications around Bountiful;
Moroni continues preparing for war (Alma 53)
o Helaman
and his army takes Antiparah when the Lamanites abandon it (Alma 57)

29th
year
o Ammoron
and Moroni negotiate for prisoners (Alma 54)
o Moroni
recovers their prisoners in the city of Gid by getting the Lamanites
intoxicated; he takes over and fortifies Gid and takes many Lamanite prisoners
(Alma 55)
o Helaman
takes the city of Cumeni and have many Lamanite prisoners (Alma 57)
o Helaman
and his army have another difficult battle with the Lamanites and the stripling
warriors are again miraculously spared (Alma 57)
o Helaman,
Gid, and Teomner take the city of Manti back from the Lamanites (Alma 58)

30th
year
o Moroni
receives a letter from Helaman about the 2000 stripling warriors and their
success (Alma 56)
o The
Lamanites take the city of Nephihah (Alma 59)
o Moroni
request help from Pahoran in two letters (Alma 59-60)
o Pahoran
replies that the king-men have taken over Zarahemla and requests Moroni’s aid (Alma
61)
o Moroni
retake Zarahemla and punished the king-men (Alma 62)

31st
year
o Moroni
and Pahoran take back Nephihah from the Lamanites (Alma 62)
o Teancum
slays Ammoron and is killed (Alma 62)
o The
Lamanites are driven out and the war is over (Alma 62)
