Find Him in the Temple
The title of Elder Rasband’s most recent talk in general conference comes from these words of the Savior to the Nephites: “Therefore, hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do. Behold ye see that I have prayed unto the Father, and ye all have witnessed” (3 Nephi 18:24). He invited us to hold up the light of the Savior and to sustain the Lord’s prophet in our day. Elder Rasband said, “To hold up the prophet is a sacred work. We do not sit quietly by but actively defend him, follow his counsel, teach his words, and pray for him…. Brothers and sisters, we need to do more lifting and less murmuring, more upholding the word of the Lord, His ways, and His prophet, who has said: ‘One of our greatest challenges today is distinguishing between the truths of God and the counterfeits of Satan. That is why the Lord warned us to “pray always, … that [we] may conquer Satan, and … escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold [the adversary’s] work” [Doctrine and Covenants 10:5; emphasis added].’” In addition to praying for the prophet, one of the most important ways we can sustain and hold up the prophet today is to heed his words. One of the most consistent invitations he has given us during his time as the prophet is to focus more on the temple. Elder Rasband quoted these words of President Nelson: “In our time, a whole, complete, and perfect union of all dispensations, keys, and powers are to be welded together (see Doctrine and Covenants 128:18). For these sacred purposes, holy temples now dot the earth. I emphasize again that construction of these temples may not change your life, but your service in the temple surely will.” President Nelson has announced 185 temples and repeatedly emphasized with his words and actions that we need to focus our lives around the temple.
President
Nelson has explained the reason for his focus on the temple: the Savior. He
taught, “The Savior and His doctrine are the very heart of the temple. Everything
taught in the temple, through instruction and through the Spirit, increases our
understanding of Jesus Christ. His essential ordinances bind us to Him through
sacred priesthood covenants. Then, as we keep our covenants, He endows us with
His healing, strengthening power.” In general
conference last October he also said this: “In the house of the Lord, we
focus on Jesus Christ. We learn of Him. We make covenants to follow Him. We
come to know Him. As we keep our temple covenants, we gain greater access to
the Lord’s strengthening power. In the temple, we receive protection from the
buffetings of the world. We experience the pure love of Jesus Christ and our
Heavenly Father in great abundance! We feel peace and spiritual reassurance, in
contrast to the turbulence of the world.” He continued, “Here is my promise
to you: Every sincere seeker of Jesus Christ will find Him in the temple. You
will feel His mercy. You will find answers to your most vexing questions. You
will better comprehend the joy of His gospel.” In our time in the temple we
should seek to find the Savior and hear His voice.
