Isaiah's Names of Christ

Nephi told us that he read the words of Isaiah to his brethren “that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet Isaiah” (1 Nephi 19:23).  He also told us that “[Isaiah] verily saw [the] Redeemer” even as Nephi had seen Him.  Isaiah’s witness of Christ was one of the main reasons that Nephi quoted so much from Isaiah.  It’s not clear to all readers that the God that Isaiah speaks of is Christ, but once we realize that He was indeed “the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament” (as The Living Christ document states) then we can see more readily just how much Isaiah spoke of Him.  I thought I would look today and see how many different names (and brief phrases that could be used as names) describing Christ—or Jehovah as He was called—are in the words of Isaiah.  Many of these are of course repeated numerous times:

Lord (1:2), Holy One of Israel (1:4), Lord of hosts (1:9), Mighty one of Israel (1:24), God (1:10), God of Jacob (2:3), Lord God of hosts (3:15), God that is holy (5:16), King (6:5), Lord God (7:7), Lord thy God (7:11), Immanuel (7:14), Stone of stumbling (8:14), Rock of offense (8:14), Wonderful (9:6), Counsellor (9:6), Mighty God (9:6), Everlasting Father (9:6), Prince of peace (9:6), Light of Israel (10:17), Holy One (10:17), Stem of Jesse (11:1), A Branch (11:1), Lord Jehovah (12:2), Almighty (13:6), Most High (14:14), Lord God of Israel (17:6), Maker (17:7), God of thy salvation (17:10), Rock of thy strength (17:10), Strength (25:4), Refuge from the storm (25:4), Shadow from the heat (25:4), Lord our God (26:13), Tried stone (28:16), precious corner stone (28:16), a sure foundation (28:16), wonderful in counsel (28:29), Holy One of Jacob (29:23), God of Israel (29:23), God of judgment (30:18), Glorious Lord (33:21), Judge (33:22), Lawgiver (33:22), The living God (37:4), Shepherd (40:11), Everlasting God (40:28), Creator of the ends of the earth (40:28), Redeemer (41:14), King of Jacob (41:21), God the Lord (42:5), Saviour (43:3), Creator of Israel (43:15), Lord the king of Israel (44:6), Redeemer the Lord of Hosts (44:6), First (44:6), Last (44:6), Lord that maketh all things (44:24), Lord that created the heavens (45:18), Just God (45:21), Redeemer of Israel (49:7), Mighty One of Jacob (49:26), Man of sorrows (53:3), God of the whole earth (54:5), Lord thy Redeemer (54:8), Holy (57:15), Everlasting light (60:19), Father (64:8), Potter (64:8), God of truth (65:16)

That makes seventy different names or brief descriptions of Christ, and I’m sure I didn’t get them all.  Clearly Isaiah knew Christ, and his words are a powerful testimony of the Jehovah of the Old Testament who would become the Savior of the New Testament.
